1936 Paper on Explosions of Steam Boilers

Released: April 17, 2008

Officials continue to investigate the cause of a boiler explosion at the power plant Wednesday, April 16 on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater campus.

No official cause of the blast has been determined. Cleanup work is underway and the building will be inspected Thursday afternoon.

University officials hope to reopen Esker Dining Hall by noon Friday. Until Esker reopens, extended hours of service will be offered at Drumlin Dining Hall and the James R. Connor University Center.

Steam service will likely return Sunday or Monday. Until that time there will be no hot water or heat on campus. Students in the residence halls are encouraged to leave their windows closed to conserve heat.

"We know this is inconvenient for our students but we hope that everyone will continue to be patient as we work to make the necessary repairs. We will make repairs as quickly as possible but until then please, be patient," Interim Chancellor Richard Telfer said.

Telfer also noted that the campus community is fortunate that no one was seriously injured in the blast.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
